Chapter 6
“Adam?” Evette called out in confusion. “What are you doing here?”
“Evette, hi,” he said. “I see you’ve met Jordan.”
Jordan and Evette exchanged looks, unsure of what to say. Evette was nervous because her boss had shown up at her house but Jordan knew better. Adam was clearly here for some strange emotional reason and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to get involved.
“Jordan I should probably take care of this. Can we talk later?” she asked.
“Fine by me. I’m sure you’ll have a better time with Adam, anyway. By the way, I’m leaving tomorrow to head back to Los Angeles for work. I’ll see you around,” he said, turning to walk back into his cabin.
“Jordan wait,” she said but he ignored her. They both jumped slightly as he slammed the cabin door shut.
“Well somebody seems to be in a bad mood,” Adam said.
Evette rolled her eyes and led him into the house.
Adam began to rummage around Evette’s house for ingredients to make dinner. He handed Evette one of her beers and told her to relax on the couch while he cooked. She did as she was told, too distracted with what was going on to say no. Jordan was so angry when he left, and she had no idea why. From what he’d said, he was a close friend with Adam. In fact, everyone at the cabin site seemed to know and like Adam.
Unfortunately for Jordan, Adam was always outsmarting him. They’d been friends since before he went to Med School, and had remained close years later. But Adam was the one who always got the girls that Jordan had a crush on. He was never sure if Adam was aware of what he was doing or if he was just ignorant.
His hair was a sandy blonde and he was born in San Diego, California. When he told Jordan he was going to law school, he practically laughed in his friend’s face. It just didn’t seem like something he was capable of achieving. Adam was a party-chaser, a player, and he especially didn’t want to be tied down. When he’d gotten engaged a few summers ago to Jocelyn, Jordan had waited for them to implode. They seemed happy at first, which was a surprise for everyone.
Now, though, Adam was up to his old tricks. He was clearly trying to woo Evette with some grand gesture. Even though he didn’t know Evette very well, Jordan thought she didn’t have feelings for Adam. She’d acted flippant when she brought up the law office.
And Evette had even told Jordan that she didn’t believe in marriage, let alone settling down with someone. What was Adam up to?
Inside the cabin, he was busy cooking Evette spaghetti and meatballs. The house filled with the thick scent of spices as he stirred the sauce with paprika and pepper. Evette downed her beer and within minutes was already drinking another. She was anxious that Adam was here, especially because he was a married man. What did he
